The Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete

Through the kindness of Gwydion, who recorded the above YouTube clip, I present five of the nine Odes of the Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete, which we will be singing at St. Andrew's Russian Catholic Church next Monday, for the start of Great and Holy Lent. We will be singing the balance of the Odes next Friday.

While I had requested this recording in order to complete the Byzantine Hymnography application for the St. Stephen's program, and in spite of my poor voice (I definitely need to work on tremulo issues with my vocal technique), I present this to you to give at least an inkling of the beauty and depth of spirituality of this Canon. Those wanting more can go to the Metropolitan Cantor Institute of Professor J. Michael Thompson, and find the sheet music and a competent full text of the Canon in Carpatho Rusyn chant here. It would also well reward the inquiring soul to examine the publications of this worthy organization here, and the recordings of them here.

May you have a good Great and Holy Lent, and may you have a good journey to Pascha.
